Educational Area

At the middle entrance to the 149 acre field 53, we start with a small pavilion and greenhouse a little way in from the highway, so as not to make it a tourist attraction. From there we plant some harvestable medicinals (such as Noni). Just south of this area is a little gulch that would be an ideal location for an educational garden, along the lines of the greenwell ethnobotanical garden, on the Kona side of the big island (link) These areas would be used for school classes where our children could learn about hawaiian native plants and their medicinal purposes. There are a number of management options that could range from a public private cooperative effort between mlp and community, or a non profit organization, or an extension of a university. Out toward the headland is a natural spot for a Hula Mound that could be managed in connection with the hawaiian 501c3.
At the northern entrance to field 53, we start with a small clearing and determine
the best way to clean the aina of the plastic and remediate the soil. One possible solution is to plant 'Sunn hemp' and turn it into the soil. (link)
From here we fan out the planting of grass and native plants such as A'ali'i , Ma'o, Maiapilo, Ilima, and U'lei. Also trees such as Loulu palm, Naio, Lama and Alahe'e. We continue this process until the entire field 53 is preserved in open space. The Kupuna we have spoken to do not want to see any improvements in the Punalau area.
